Snap Happy

hello there

Following on from Wednesdays interview with the wonderful Emma Birkett, this week’s challenge was to create a playlist inspired by photography. Turns out a lot of good songs mention photographs!!! Thank goodness for that!

Have a listen to our playlist below:

(artists include Belle and Sebastian, Johnny Cash, Elliot Smith and The Cure)

We also thought we’d share a couple of our favourite photographers and their work with you. It’s always great to discover new names too, have you got any that you can share with us? We’d love to hear.

Firstly, a firm favourite is Gregory Crewdson, who is known for his large scale elaborately staged photographs

They are both beautiful and terrifying all at once. We are reminded of films like The Virgin Suicides and American Beauty. The eeriness of suburbia. We love how they almost look like intricate paintings rather than photographs too.

This is a great video in which Crewdson talks about his creative process. Definitely have a watch.

Another of our favourites is Rune Guneriussen

“These dream-like installations are assembled, and then photographed by Norwegian artist Rune Guneriussen. Just imagine being out for a walk in Norway’s countryside, turning a corner and discovering a magical forest of lamps, a tangle of chairs, or a river of books. Sadly, once the photograph is taken, Rune removes the installation, the only proof of it’s existence being these images… sort of like waking up from an amazing dream that you could have sworn was real.”

Rune says: “As an artist, I believe strongly that art itself should be questioning and bewildering as opposed to patronising and restricting. As opposed to the current fashion I do not want to dictate a way to the understanding of my art, but rather indicate a path to understanding a story.”

have a great weekend
